According to a new study, one’s relationship status may have an impact on how much alcohol they consume.
Researchers from the University of Virginia found that people who are married or cohabitating, tend to drink less than their single counterparts.
For the study, the team examined existing data gathered as part of the Washington State Twin Registry.
They focused on the behaviors of 2,425 same-sex twins in an effort to cast out variables such as upbringing and predispositions of the genetic variety.
The researchers found out that "the married co-twins...consumed less alcohol than their single or divorced co-twins and also drank less frequently. Cohabitating twins, like their married cohorts, consumed less alcohol than single or divorced twins."
Why relationship status impacts drinking habits remains unknown. However, Diana Dinescu, one of the researchers suggests it could be due to, “…a monitoring effect that partners have on each other.”
