During summers, soaring temperatures pose a significant risk to pets stuck in cars.
On Monday, a 911 caller alerted the New York City Police Department to a woman living in her SUV in the Bronx area.
The department said in a statement, "After the officers arrived...they witnessed 22 dogs also inside the small truck with a 54-year-old woman. After speaking with the woman, it was determined that she was emotionally disturbed and she was taken to a local hospital for evaluation."
Describing the animals' conditions, the news release notes, "The 22 puppies and one German shepherd were living in terrible filth and temperatures in the car were dangerously high."
Soon after being found, the dogs were placed under the care of local animal rescue organizations.
