Zidane not sure Real deserved Super Cup victory

Dani Carvajal scored a stunning late goal as Champions League winners Real Madrid beat Europa League holders Sevilla 3-2 after extra-time in an all-Spanish UEFA Super Cup thriller in Trondheim, Norway on Tuesday (August 9).

Right back Carvajal went on a weaving run in the Sevilla half in the 119th minute before lifting the ball over goalkeeper Sergio Rico and being mobbed by ecstatic team mates.

Boss Zinedine Zidane said that the result was harsh on his opponents.

"In my point of view, for a good final we need two strong sides and we saw it tonight, a great Sevilla team. I'm not 100% sure if we fully deserved the title because Sevilla also deserved something better in the match. In the end we are happy to win this title," said the Frenchman, before his players raided the news conference to celebrate.

Real looked down and out when they trailed 2-1 with one minute to go in normal time but captain Sergio Ramos took the match into extra-time with a last-gasp header from a cross by Lucas Vazquez in front of a crowd of 21,166.

Ramos has made a habit of late goals in Real Madrid finals, including the 2014 Champions League final, and he was awarded with the man of the match award.

Madrid club, who were without Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Toni Kroos and Pepe, haven't added the usual big names in the transfer window this season, but Zidane said he was happy with the squad at his disposal.

"It's a strong squad with experienced players and also young players and that's what I want in this team. The group is the most important thing," he said.

Sevilla next meet La Liga champions Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday.

Real begin their league campaign against Real Sociedad on Aug. 21.
