Australian Mack Horton makes a splash in Rio

It came down to the final 50 metres, but Australia’s Mack Horton made a splash when he clinched the men’s 400 metres freestyle, beating the 2012 Olympic champion in the process.

Horton finished in three minutes 41.55 seconds, a hair’s breadth ahead of China’s Sun Yang (3:41.68).

Gabriele Detti of Italy came in third, almost two seconds behind the winner (3:43.49).

Great Britain was in for a disappointment. James Guy was leading for more than half of the race, but couldn’t quite keep up the pace. He came in in sixth place.

Horton will also complete in the men’s 1,500 metres freestyle and the 4×200 metre freestyle relay.
