U.S. Reportedly Delivered $400 Million To Iran As Detainees Were Freed

On Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal reported the January freeing of 4 Americans being detained in Tehran coincided with a US to Iran air transfer of $400 million.

In January, 4 Americans being detained in Tehran were released.

On Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that same day, the US delivered stacks of myriad foreign currencies totaling the equivalent of $400 million US dollars to Iran via plane.

While some see the money as a ransom payment, American officials say the cash was part of a claims settlement related to a failed arms agreement dating back to the 1970s.

A spokesperson for the State Department further explained, “Not only were the two negotiations separate, they were conducted by different teams on each side, including, in the case of The Hague claims, by technical experts involved in these negotiations for many years.”

The total paid to Iran in relation to that matter was $1.7 billion, though exactly how the remainder was satisfied remains undisclosed.
