A team of doctors in Greece says it has discovered a way to reverse menopause, providing hope for women who thought their childbearing years were over.
The technique involves drawing blood from the post-menopausal patient and isolating its growth factors, reports New Scientist.
Next, the resulting platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is injected into the ovaries.
If the menstrual cycle resumes as expected, which it has for some patients, eggs are collected and fertilized.
The researchers have yet to implant any of the resulting embryos but do have plans to perform such a procedure in the near future.
News of the treatment has been met with criticism and questions about whether or not it is ethical.
Pregnancy in older women has a high risk of coming with serious complications, including pre-eclampsia, miscarriage, and gestational diabetes.
The researchers note the method could also be used as a means of avoiding health issues related to menopause, such as hot flashes and accelerated bone and tissue aging.
