Neuroscientists Have Just Identified Almost 100 New Regions In Human Brain

An international team of researchers has released a more precise map of the human brain which includes 97 newly defined areas in addition to the 83 that were already known.

A recently released map of the human brain includes nearly 100 newly defined areas.
The effort was undertaken by an international team as a continuation of the Human Connectome Project which began in 2010.
According to the Washington Post, during this phase of the research, scientists used four different methods to capture extremely precise images of the brains of 1,200 young adult participants.
By parsing out attributes like function and topography, the group was able to identify 180 areas in each hemisphere--97 of which had not been previously reported.
The New York Times points out that the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in the front part of the brain was found to be composed of as many as 12 parts which could each contribute to the thoughts that are produced.
Meanwhile, another section that was added, called 55-B, has been linked with language.
The team expects the map to be used by the neuroimaging community and possibly surgeons in advance of procedures, notes Gizmodo.
