[Newsa] McKayla Maroney Responds to People Upset About Her “Changing” Look
5 years ago
McKayla Maroney is objectively a badass. When she was 16 years old, the gymnast took home both a gold and silver medal at the 2012 Olympics as part of the "Fierce Five," accomplishing more in her teen years than many people do in a lifetime. As TODAY points out, though, McKayla’s huge accomplishments don’t negate the fact that she’s a woman in the public eye. Yes, we've been down this road before: A super successful athlete is now facing criticism over her looks, and McKayla is unfortunately the latest to be targeted by speculation. McKayla is not returning to the Olympics this year, and TODAY reports she’s pursuing her passion for music. Along with that, she has a new interest in makeup that, coupled with her being four years older than when she was at the London games, has made her look a little different from when her face was all over America's TV screens during the 2012 Olympics. It's all made some people wonder whether she’s had plastic surgery, even though she hasn't . McKayla took to Instagram to quiet the haters, though, telling everyone to basically concern themselves with something other than her looks. “i totally understand why people are upset about me ‘changing’, i get it.. but if i can promise you one thing, it's that i will never stop changing. life is all about growing, evolving, and becoming more and more yourself, and these last couple years i've done nothing but that! i've finally gotten myself to the point where i know who i am, and what i want out life, and you can either love me, or hate me for that. either way, i love you, and wish you the best, because to me a real role model is someone who has the courage to be exactly who they are no matter what anyone else thinks.. and if i can inspire one person to live like that, then i've done my job on this planet.#KeepSmiling “ McKayla’s message is perfect. We all change in a lot of ways as we get older. What counts is coming to love and accept yourself every step of the way, something Pretty Little Liars ’ Sasha Pieterse recently penned an Instagram post about . McKayla also poked fun at the controversy in another Instagram post: For both her Olympic achievements and her posts, McKayla is definitely a good role model, showing us that following your passions and staying true to yourself are the most important things.
