As dramatic as Vincent van Gogh cutting off a piece of his ear sounds, an amateur historian and author suggests that version of the event downplays what actually happened.

As dramatic as Vincent van Gogh cutting off a piece of his ear sounds, an amateur historian and author suggests that version of the event downplays what actually happened.
According to Bernadette Murphy, a sketch made by Félix Rey, the painter’s doctor, indicates the entire left ear, save for a piece of the lobe, was removed, notes Smithsonian.com.
Murphy says she found the image in the Irving Stone Archives at the University of California, Berkeley.
Stone had personally requested the depiction of van Gogh’s damaged ear from Rey in 1930.
The New York Times is reporting that drawing will be on display at the Van Gogh Museum as part of its upcoming “On the Verge of Insanity” exhibition.
The selection of paintings, objects, and documents featured are intended to provide some clarity about the artist’s struggle with mental illness and how it impeded his work.
