On Monday morning, a 9-year-old girl in Lowell, Indiana discovered a newborn baby in her backyard.

Though Elysia Laub wasn’t quite sure what she was seeing, she quickly ran inside and told her mother. The woman brought the infant indoors and called authorities.

The baby was still attached to the umbilical cord and placenta, and had likely been outside for hours, if not overnight.

According to the Washington Post, the newborn was "...taken to a local hospital where medical staff evaluated her and determined she was healthy, full-term and in good condition, aside from being sunburned."

John Buncich, the Lake County Sheriff, credited young Elysa Laub as being instrumental in the infant's survival, saying, “…if the 9-year-old wouldn’t have gone outside, this could’ve had a very different outcome.”
