WICHITA, KANSAS — The father of a child suffering from cancer has won a “father of the year” photo contest after a picture he submitted of him and his son went viral.

The image submitted by Josh Marshall, 28, from Kansas, shows a large scar on his son’s head next to a tattoo replica of the scar on his own head. The photo was submitted to the St. Baldrick Foundation’s #BestBaldDad competition, in which 55 dads who shaved their heads in support of their children with cancer submitted photo entries.

Marshall’s son, Gabriel, now 8 years old, was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer called anaplastic astrocytoma in March 2015. Surgeries to remove his tumor left him bald with a scar on the right side of his head.

Marshall got a matching scar tattoo in August 2015 to help boost Gabrial’s confidence.

The submitted photo received more than 5,000 votes and won first place.

“I never intended for it to be this big,” Marshall told ABC News. “It was just a friendly competition between fellow cancer dads and people showing support for their loved ones who have fought cancer.”

Although a small portion of the tumor still remains, Gabriel’s cancer hasn’t grown. He still receives scans once every three months.
