Neeraj Ghyawan’s Maasan after winning accolades at the international film festival has released today. The movie set in Varanasi is a beautiful film with social highlights. It shows two love stories which find themselves stuck in modernity and age-old traditions. The caste politics existing in the society and sexual morality is touched upon in the film. Richa Chadha plays the strong coming of age girl who gets caught in a blackmail after she is found getting sexual with a guy she has hardly known. On the other hand we see a story of a lower caste boy (Vicky Kaushal) who dares to fall in love with an upper caste girl (Shweta Tripathi). The story doesn’t have a happy ending but the movie on the whole is a masterpiece of strong subject. The performances are beautiful with all the characters being extremely relatable. The cinematography is brilliant capturing the essence of the locations. All in all it is a serious film which if you should if you like non-masala, relevant films.
