High school seniors are becoming graduates all across the nation, but one teen in Texas is garnering more attention than most.
WNYW is reporting that while Larissa Martinez’s achievements, which include being named valedictorian and receiving a full scholarship to Yale University, are certainly impressive, it’s her graduation speech that is making many take note.
During her address at the McKinney Boyd High School commencement ceremony last week, Martinez revealed, “I am one of the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the shadows of the United States.”
She explained that in 2010 her family moved from Mexico City to escape her father, an abusive alcoholic, notes WFAA.
Martinez said she decided to finally share her personal story as it, “…might be my only chance to convey the truth to all of you that undocumented immigrants are people too.”
She also noted, “America can be great again without the construction of a wall built on hatred and prejudice."
Martinez’ speech came to light only days after another Texas valedictorian revealed her own undocumented status via Twitter.
