NEW YORK — Police are trying to determine whether two separate shootings that took place within 10 hours of each other on the same Coney Island block on Sunday were related.

The first shooting in Coney Island on June 5 reportedly took place at around 4:35 in the morning around Neptune Ave. and W. 16 St., and followed a dispute between a man and woman, according to the New York Daily News. A 38-year-old innocent bystander was shot in his back.

Sandra De Jesus, 65, who lived nearby, told the Daily News that she was woken up when the victim began banging on her door, asking for help. However, she wouldn’t open the door.

Later in the day, at reportedly around 2:20 p.m., four men were shot when a shootout took place at Mermaid Ave. and W. 15th Street. Batik Mahmood, 26, told the Daily News that he was delivering pizza when he saw about six men involved in the shootout on the corner outside S&M Mini Market. According to Mahmood, some men sought shelter behind a grey Nissan SUV, while others fled into buildings and down the street.

One of the men involved in the shootout was later reportedly seen running down the street and shouting that he had been hit. His torso was seen bleeding from a wound in his stomach.

Two people were rushed to Lutheran Medical Center while the other two victims walked into Coney Island Hospital, according to police. All four reportedly in stable condition.

Police later discovered a silver and black handgun under an Infiniti parked nearby, and two men were reportedly taken into custody for questioning at the scene, although no arrests were made.

It is unclear whether the two incidents were related.
