Endangered gorilla shot dead after kid falls into zoo enclosure

CINCINNATI — By all accounts, a 400-lb gorilla is something you'd not want your kids around, but on Saturday May 28 one four-year-old reportedly boy got up and close and personal with one at Cincinnati Zoo. Real close.

According to reports, a mother with several kids was visiting the Gorilla enclosure when her son somehow managed to make his way inside. After falling into the enclosure's moat the boy, Harambe — a western lowland gorilla — began dragging and throwing him around violently.

Zoo staff had to choose between hitting Harambe with a tranquilizer dart or putting him down. Unfortunately they went with the latter and killed the primate.

"They made a tough choice and they made the right choice because they saved that little boy's life", Zoo director Thayne Maynard explained to NBC affiliate WLWT5. "It could have been very bad".

The boy was taken to a local hospital but was released Saturday night, WLWT reported.
