Road collapse near ancient bridge gives Florence that old sinking feeling

FLORENCE, ITALY — A stretch of road collapsed in central Florence on Wednesday, swallowing a row of parked cars and cutting water supplies.
The sinkhole formed under Lungarno Torrigiani, a road that runs alongside the Arno River. It was 200 meters long, 6 meters wide and up to 7 meters deep, according to reports.
The collapse occurred just 200 meters from the Ponte Vecchio, a 14th century bridge that is one of the key landmarks of the ancient city, La Repubblica reported.
At around 1 a.m., a crack occurred in a cast-iron water pipe running underneath Lungarno Torrigiani. Cracks then formed in the road above, before the leak was temporarily fixed, La Repubblica reported.
Several hours later, a second blowout in the 60-centimeter-diameter pipe led to more underground flooding. The road then collapsed, submerging some 20 parked cars, according to La Repubblica.
No one was injured in the incident. Florence mayor Dario Nardella assured residents there was no threat to the city's historic center, the Guardian reported.
