Dog Receives Life-Saving Diagnosis Moments Before Being Put Down

A last minute diagnosis of a rare tick-related disease saved the life of a Sheltie in Portland.

Many dogs love the outdoors, but for a Sheltie in Portland, a camping trip to Eastern Oregon almost ended up being his last.

After the outing, Ollie, who is 10 years old, became so weak he was unable to eat on his own.

A trip to the vet and a full round of tests turned up no obvious cause, and though a treatment was prescribed, it did nothing to stop his degrading condition.

Before long, the dog was experiencing nearly full paralysis.

Having made the difficult decision to have Ollie put down, his owners took him to DoveLewis, an area emergency animal hospital.

That’s where Ollie’s luck took a turn for the better.

Dr. Adam Stone and extern Neena Golden discovered a burrowed tick behind the Sheltie’s ear.
