The 5 Global Mobile Award nominees

It’s that time of year again where we get to look at the future of tech at the Mobile World Congress - only this year Softonic is also the sponsor of the GloMo Awards 2016 - an award that decide the best application of the year. So, in today's show, we thought we would take a look at the five nominees for the best overall app.

The first nominee is a native app that many of you just have on you all the time - like a wallet… kind of exactly like a wallet actually because the first app is Apple Pay, Apple’s secure payment service that is becoming the market standard. Thanks to the NFC antenna in iPhone 6, paying with your mobile is as easy as touching your phone to payment device. Better still, same system works in Apple Watch and the new iPad. All this without ever having to take your card out of your pocket.

When Facebook span out Messenger as a separate tool, many thought the chat apps life would be limited. We were all wrong. Messenger found its audience among all those people who just wanted an easy way to connect and communicate with their Facebook friends… all of them. Which is exactly what it does, letting you send text messages, emoticons, stickers, photos, videos, and GIFs. You can even make free video and voice calls from the application, and connect with other services like Uber. It definitely deserves to be nominated for a GloMo.

Our next app will be instantly familiar to all those who saw our Virtual Reality 5 Apps recently. Google Cardboard. This great little app for a first taste of the new tech trend that is revolutionizing the entertainment and media landscape. Plus it does all using a phone and some cardboard - i think Google might be having some fun at Oculus’s expense with that one. Google Cardboard gives you access to immersive 360-degree videos from Youtube, and lets you virtually visits to cities, mountains, and museums. It's a whole new world of possibilities.

Since Twitter has allowed videos to be viewed without leaving the timeline, Periscope has gained many fans. And it's easy to see why, the ability to show the world what you are doing live at any time is... powerful - especially when you can receive instant comments and likes from anywhere on the planet. With the app you can also discover live feeds from anywhere on the planet via a handy world map and watch old videos. As the leader in this kind of communication, it is hard to argue that it is worthy of a GloMo.

The final nominee for this years GloMo’s is Samsung Pay. What makes this app so powerful as a payment platform is that as well as using NFC technology like Apple Pay, it also utilizes a patented technology that allows it to be compatible with the old with magnetic stripe readers - remember them. The system is easy to use and security is guaranteed thanks to a process called tokenization that generates a unique reference number for each transaction.

So those are the nominees, but if you want know who wins keep an eye on our Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube channels where we will notify you of the the winner and bring you highlights of this year's Mobile World Congress.

Next show we will be bringing you the best apps to change to your face. And while there may not be an award category for that at the GloMos, that doesn’t stop there being some great nominees... Trust me, you’ll see. And I will see you then.
