Terrorism suspected as search continues for EgyptAir flight 804

CAIRO — The search for an EgyptAir flight from Paris to Cairo that disappeared from radar Thursday with 66 passengers and crew on board continues in the Mediterranean Sea.

Egypt Air flight 804 bound for Cairo left Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport at 11:09 p.m. on Thursday. It disappeared after entering Egyptian airspace at 2:37 a.m.

The Airbus A320 had made four other flights in the 24 hours before its doomed flight: from Asmara to Cairo; then to Tunis; back to Cairo; and then to Paris.

At 2:45 a.m., just 20 minutes before it was due to land, the plane descended rapidly from a cruising altitude of 37,000 feet to 15,000 feet and then 10,000 feet, when it disappeared from radar.

The Egyptian civil aviation ministry said earlier that Greek authorities had found life jackets and plastic materials near Karpathos Island, but the Greek air safety authority, which is leading the search operation, said the debris did not come from the missing plane.

According to Reuters, satellite images of the area where the plane disappeared show no signs of an explosion. Authorities have not yet ruled out any of the possible causes of the accident, which include mechanical failure, terrorism, or a deliberate act by the pilot or crew.

Aviation experts believe the situation was likely the result of a terrorist act rather than mechanical failure, according to the BBC.
