GPS projectiles provide safer alternative to high-speed police chases
  • 8 years ago
MILWAUKEE — More than 50 law enforcement agencies across the United States are using a new system that gives police a safer way to catch fleeing suspects.

Instead of firing ammunition and engaging suspects in a dangerous and potentially fatal car chase, the system uses two 4-1/2-inch projectiles packed with GPS satellite trackers. One end is coated with adhesive which allows them to stick to a moving vehicle. They are then loaded into a launcher mounted on the front of a police car.

The technology, developed by a company named StarChase, has reportedly not been involved in a single fatality, injury, property damage or liability claim, according to CBS News.

During a car chase, officers press a button on the control console in the car or on a key fob. This triggers the launcher, which uses compressed air to fire the projectile at a fleeing vehicle. Once it attaches, they can retreat safely and monitor the car's location with the tracker. Suspects are tracked and later arrested.

Authorities in Milwaukee, Wisconsin have been trialing StarChase since December. It has been successful 28 times during this period, with 17 people taken into custody and 26 stolen vehicles recovered.
