10 Facts You Probably Didn't Know About DDLJ

Aditya Chopra’s directorial debut Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, which released on October 19, 1995 has completed 20 years. The film propelled Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol to super stardom and made their characters Raj and Simran household names.

Here are ten facts which you probably didn’t know about the cult classic:

1. The film was initially offered to Saif Ali Khan, however he turned it down. In fact, Aditya Chopra even considered Tom Cruise for the male lead but later dropped the idea. Finally¸ Shah Rukh Khan played Raj Malhotra and the rest as they say is history.

2. Aditya Chopra named the protagonist Raj Malhotra to pay a tribute to legendary actor Raj Kapoor.

3. Juhi Chawla had a cameo in the film however, it didn’t make the cut after the final edit.

4. To capture her natural expressions, Aditya didn’t tell Kajol that she’ll be dropped by Shah Rukh Khan at the end of the song Ruk Jaa O Dil Deewane.

5. The popular track Mehandi Laga Ke Rakhna was not a part of DDLJ and was written for another film.

6. The title Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was suggested by Anupam Kher’s wife Kirron Kher.

7. Shah Rukh was initially reluctant to play Raj Malhotra – a typical lover boy, as he had attained success playing the anti-hero in films like Baazigar and Darr.

8. Aditya Chopra rejected 24 verses before approving the final version of Mere Khwaabo Mein Jo Aye, written by late lyricist Anand Bakshi.

9. Karan Johar marked his screen debut with DDLJ. The film also marked Mandira Bedi’s Bollywood debut.

10. The movie completed 1,000 weeks on December 12 last year and is still running at Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir theater.
