Shark bites Florida woman's arm and then refuses to let her go

BOCA RATON, FLORIDA — A fun day at the beach went downhill fast for a woman who found herself on the receiving end of a very sharp set of teeth.

The 23-year-old woman and her male companion went swimming at Red Reef Park in Boca Raton, Florida yesterday afternoon, the Sun Sentinel reported.

The pair were seen near a rock pile formation about 60 feet from the shore, near where nurse sharks usually swim. Typically docile and stationary, nurse sharks rarely attack humans, except when provoked.

The woman and her friend grabbed the 2-foot long nurse shark by its tail, perhaps prompting it to bite the woman's right forearm with its small yet razor-sharp teeth, witnesses told the Sun Sentinel.

Beachgoers were shocked when they saw the woman emerge from the water with a shark clamped down on her arm. Her male friend held onto the shark, which refused to let go and eventually died before paramedics arrived, according to CBS.

The woman, who has not been named, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and bleeding. She was in stable condition and later released, presumably with the shark now removed.
