Endangered Sumatran rhino gives birth to second calf at Indonesian sanctuary

SUMATRA, INDONESIA — An endangered rhino has given birth and it was caught on camera.
The 14-year-old rhino, named Rato, gave birth at the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary in Indonesia. Video footage shows the rhino prepping for delivery by rubbing her horns on a tree. It quickly cuts to a night scene, where the rhino births its young.
According to the International Rhino Foundation, the female calf was born on Thursday, May 12. It weighs roughly 45 pounds (20 kilograms), and appears healthy and active.
The Foundation shared a video and images on its social media accounts of the calf running around and feeding.
Only an estimated 100 Sumatran rhinos remain on Earth, mostly on the island of Sumatra, with several in captivity. Destruction of tropical forest habitat and poachers who kill the animals for their horns, which are prized for making ornaments and for use in traditional medicine in China and other parts of Asia, have threatened the species.
The calf is the second for Ratu, who gave birth to a male named Andatu in 2012, which was the first rhino birth in captivity in Indonesia in 124 years.
