Russia angered as U.S. activates missile defense site in Romania, part of the European missile defense

DEVESELU AIR BASE, ROMANIA —The United States on May 12 officially activated a radar system in Romania, part of a missile defense system in Europe. The move was immediately denounced by Russia.

"We are convinced unconditionally that the deployment of an antimissile defense system does indeed pose a threat to the security of the Russian Federation," the Wall Street Journal quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying.

The missile system is installed at the Deveselu air base. It can intercept rockets fired from countries such as Iran.

The system, known as the Aegis Ashore, can detect incoming missiles and identify the types of warhead before launching interceptor missiles, from ships or ground sites, to destroy it in space.

U.S. officials insist that the European missile defense is not targeted at Russia nor is it technically capable of taking down a barrage of Russian missiles.

"Russia knows this is not directed against them. They know geography, physics makes it impossible for this system to undermine Russia's strategic deterrent," NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told Wall Street Journal.

Another missile system will be constructed in Poland. The overall U.S. missile defence in Europe also includes NATO'S command and control center at the Ramstein air base in Germany and U.S. warships with interceptor missiles based in Spain. The shield will stretch from Greenland to the Azores when complete.
