Following on from her first album, Vari-Colored Songs, Leyla McCalla continues her multi-cultural exploration of her two home countries: Haiti, where she was born, and the United States, where she lives in New Orleans. The present day successor of Alan Lomax is imprinted with the history of American folk and jazz. She can play a number of instruments and writes and sings in English, French and Creole. Whether she tackles fresh versions of traditional pieces or original compositions, something timeless, natural and intense is tangible in all of her songs, as well as crucial hints of liberty and humanism.
Dans la lignée de son premier album Vari-Colored Songs, Leyla McCalla poursuit l’exploration multi-culturelle de ses deux pays, Haïti dont elle est originaire et les Etats-Unis où elle vit à La Nouvelle-Orléans. Héritière moderne d’Alan Lomax et marquée par l’histoire du folk américain et du jazz, elle est multi-instrumentiste et écrit et chante en anglais, en français et en créole. Qu’il s’agisse de morceaux traditionnels revisités ou de compositions originales, il flotte dans toutes ses chansons quelque chose d’intemporel, de naturel et d’intense à la fois, en même temps que des parfums essentiels de liberté et d’humanisme.
