Public calls for punishment of Florida policeman who beat up homeless man

ORLANDO, FLORIDA — Citizens have urged the U.S. Attorney's Office to review a case in which a Florida policeman beat a homeless man and got off scot-free.

In August 2015, a cellphone and police body cam videos caught the moment officer James Wilson confronted homeless man Terre Johnson, who was sitting on a curb in Orlando, Florida.

The officer told Johnson that he was sitting on city-owned property and that his feet were in the street. When Johnson told him he wasn't doing anything wrong, Wilson said he would arrest him on the grounds of camping on public property. Wilson also mentions how Johnson would not be able to pay the fine.

Johnson tells the officer to get out of his face right before he is tackled to the ground. While Wilson's police body cam goes black, having been disconnected in the scuffle, someone passing by filmed the officer pinning the homeless man on the ground.

Following the incident, Johnson was arrested for resisting arrest while Wilson was orally reprimanded for violating conduct toward the public. Johnson's charge was reduced to battery and later found not guilty.

Now, the Citizen's Police Review Board wants the case to be reopened. The board does not agree with how things went down. They believe that Johnson's rights were violated, that Wilson didn't issue any commands and that Johnson was never told he was under arrest.

Johnson remains in the Orange County Jail on charges that he assaulted a corrections officer in a separate incident, according to records.
