PITTSBURGH — A live bald eagle nest cam caught the moment two eagles fed a cat to their nestlings in Pittsburgh.

The Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania's nest cam filmed a bald eagle bring a cat to its nest, where another adult bald eagle and two eaglets were waiting. The adult eagles then began picking at the cat carcass and feeding it to the young birds.

Video of the feed was uploaded on social media and went viral. Some viewers were unsure if the footage was real, while only a few were outraged at the idea that the eagles could be eating someone's pet. Most urged owners to keep their cats indoors and simply stated that it's the circle of life.

Afterwards, Audubon responded to the hype on Facebook writing, "It's true that they brought in a cat and it's also true that they fed it to the eaglets. After reviewing the footage, we believe that the cat was dead when brought to the nest."

"While many may cringe at this, the eagles bring squirrels, rabbits, fish (and other animals) into the nest to eat multiple times each day," the post continued. "To people, the cat represents a pet but to the eagles and to other raptors, the cat is a way to sustain the eaglets and help them to grow."
