Rhythm and Vines (commonly known as R&V) is New Zealand’s biggest annual New Year’s Eve music festival.

In 2010, our youth channel ‘U’ teamed up with R&V to promote that year’s event and invite viewers to become roving reporters and the ultimate ‘R&V Summer Ambassadors’ - using their own phone cameras and social media.

The campaign had a tiny budget, but the idea was to celebrate and encourage sharing their quintessential summer times with mates ‘caught on the fly’, while on the road to R&V.

A small crew of us jumped in a car for the weekend, pulling every favour we could with friends and relatives, to shoot a small cast on a road trip to a popular seaside destination, filming on Canon 5Ds and finding absurd ways to shoot scenes unnoticed to elicit authentic interactions onscreen.

The campaign was so successful, that U and R&V continued this partnership in subsequent years, eventually taking this idea one step further - launching it as a competition to find a new, official roving reporter/presenter for the channel..
