Thrill-seekers left hanging as VR roller coaster grinds to a halt in heavy rain

ALTON, ENGLAND — Visitors to a theme park in England got an unwanted thrill when a roller coaster stopped in mid-air on Monday.

Witnesses said terrified passengers screamed and cried when the Galactica ride at Alton Towers in Staffordshire came to a halt, leaving them facing the ground, the Telegraph reported.

Some 28 people were on board the ride when it stopped after heavy rain blocked a sensor. The stoppage was automatic and a standard safety feature, Alton Towers said in a statement, according to the Telegraph.

The ride restarted after half an hour and the passengers were brought down safely. It reopened later that day, the Telegraph reported.

The virtual reality roller coaster opened in March.

Passengers are strapped into the ride horizontally so they face the ground. They then wear a VR headset which gives them the impression they are travelling through outer space.
