Trump's more accepting views on gay issues set him apart in GOP

Trump is the leading candidate for president in the Republican primary, which has traditionally been dominated by prospects anxious to show how conservative they are on social issues like gay rights and marriage.
Trump, however, is far more accepting of sexual minorities than his party’s leaders have been.
He has fostered long friendships with gay people and employed gay workers in prominent positions.
Of course, Trump is not as embracing of gay rights as the Democratic candidates are, but as a product of the Manhattan social and political world, he’s had a long history with the gay community.
Gay rights advocates are still trying to persuade Congress to pass civil rights measures, but they have struggled to win support from Republicans in the past.
