Bristol residents say they prefer their neighborhood porn studio over housing for migrant workers

BRISTOL, UNITED KINGDOM — Residents of a St. George neighborhood in Bristol, England, are concerned about redevelopment plans that would convert a porn studio into a building that could house migrant workers.

A group of residents say they prefer the building be occupied by porn stars over migrant workers.

The property in question, located at on Ebenezer Street, was being run as a studio for filming porn and live streams by industry director and producer Phil Barry, husband of 48-year-old porn star Cathy Barry. If the new plans go forward, the building would be converted into flats that could house 40 people.
Owner, Mike Hobbins, wants to turn it into an "HMO (house of multiple occupancy) plus" with 20 double rooms, offering six-month contracts with fixed rent, including bill costs. Hobbins told the Bristol Post that the new plans are helpful to "solving the housing crisis in Bristol."

The residents, however, believe the new plans will attract transient workers, who do not respect the building and community, ultimately creating more issues.

Naomi Maggs, a 38-year-old mother, who lives across the street from the building, told the Bristol Post, "HMO is as many people as you can possibly get into a building per square foot and it's people who are on short term rental contracts, so it's not people who want to come and be a part of the community."

She also said that should plans go through, she would consider selling her home, which she has been living for 11 years.

"[The porn studio] wasn't really a problem, and any problems we did have we spoke to the owner and it got sorted," Maggs continued. "But this is going to be 40 people coming and going every six months. It's going to drive people out of St George."
Hobbins said residents of the renovated building will be professionals not transients.

More than 35 objections have been made by residents. The council is to consider the application in May.
