Gloves come off as Clinton, Sanders debate before New York primary

NEW YORK — Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders squared off on Thursday in one of the most heated debates to date, duking it out before the New York primary to be held on Tuesday.

The Vermont senator hit Clinton with his usual critiques: she takes money from banks and other corporate interests, she won't release transcripts of her speeches to Wall Street, she lacks judgment and credibility, etc.

Clinton relied on her experience, saying twice in the evening that Sanders was good at diagnosing problems but offered few credible solutions to fix them.

One of the testier exchanges came when Clinton tried to explain her nuanced position on the $15 minimum wage. Clinton has advocated for $12 at the federal level, but says she supports cities that want to enact $15 or higher. Sanders said: "I am sure a lot of people are very surprised to learn that you support raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour. That's just not accurate."

Clinton scored a blow when the subject turned to gun control. When Sanders laughed off a point made by Clinton, she retorted: "This isn't a laughing matter. Ninety people on average are killed or commit suicide or die from accidents with guns [every day] ... 33,000 people a year. I take it really seriously."

The cheering audience clearly favored Sanders. At the debate's close, Clinton highlighted her lead among pledged delegates and the popular vote. So far, she was won 9.3 million votes to Sanders' 6.9 million.
