Lost grandmother, 72, survives nine days in the wild eating plants and drinking pond water

PHOENIX — A simple message led a rescue team to an Arizona woman lost in remote back country for nine days: "HELP!"

That's what 72-year-old Ann Rodgers spelled out with sticks and rocks after getting lost near the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, Reuters reported.

Rodgers was driving from Tucson to Phoenix to see her grandchildren on March 31 when she ran out of gas. According to officials, she tried to climb several ridges to find a cell signal but got lost, Reuters reported.

Accompanied by her dog, the grandmother survived by eating plants and drinking pond water.

On April 3, officials found her car, but a massive two-day search proved fruitless. Around that time, Rodgers spelled out her cry for help near a canyon and left a note saying she planned to walk further down the valley.

On April 9, rescuers found her dog, and the help sign was spotted in an aerial search.

Rodgers was finally rescued later that day while standing next to a signal fire and waving to a helicopter.

She suffered from exposure but was released from hospital that evening and reunited with her family.
