In New York, Italian-American builder Geremio reflects on the last several years. Nine years earlier, Geremio is marrying Annunziata despite being in love with her sister, Kathleen. He fools his new wife into believing he has a house, and then spends the next several years working recklessly to save for one -- only to be ruined in the stock market crash. Wondering if he has squandered his life, Geremio determines to turn over a new leaf.
