Uber passenger takes snoozing driver on a high-speed chase, throws in a crash for the hell of it

COLESVILLE, NEW YORK — A 20-year-old man Bronx man was arrested for leading police on a high speed chase after getting behind the wheel when his Uber driver decided to catch some shut-eye.

Juan Carlos hired Uber driver Corey Robinson, 43, to drive him from Philadelphia to a college in Herkimer, police said. The trip is approximately 275-miles and takes around five hours.

During the drive, Robinson started getting tired so he asked Carlos to drive his 2016 Hyundai Sonata so he could nap a bit. Later, he awoke to Carlos speeding down the highway.

When Robinson asked him why he was driving so fast, Carlos responded because the police were chasing them. Robinson demanded that Carlos pull over, but he refused, according to police.

At around 5:35 a.m. on Interstate 81, close to Binghamton, state police clocked the Sonata going 86 mph in a 65 mph zone.

When the police attempted to pull over the vehicle, Carlos hit the gas and tried to lose them, exiting the interstate, police said.

Troopers temporarily lost sight of the car, but they located the vehicle a few minutes later crashed into a guardrail in the town of Colesville.

Both Carlos and Robinson suffered minor injuries in the crash and were treated and released from a hospital in Johnson City.

Carlos was charged with fleeing police and driving without a license. Robinson was not charged.

"Both the driver-partner and rider have been suspended from the platform while we look into the matter," Uber spokeswoman Alix Anfang. "We are reaching out to the authorities to assist in their investigation."
