Kenya marks Garissa University attacks anniversary
  • 8 years ago
Kenya has marked the first anniversary of the attacks on Garissa University. Hundreds of people wearing t-shirts sporting slogans of peace gathered at the campus to pay tribute to the victims.

Commemoration ceremonies also took place in dozens of schools and universities across the country. A marathon run was held, and a ceremonial tree planting took place in honour of those who died.

One year ago al-Shabab gunmen stormed the campus in a 10-hour ordeal which claimed the lives of 148 people, the deadliest attack in the country since 1998.

The campus reopened in January after refurbishment work but only 150 of 700 students have returned to class.
