Humongous mounds on the surface of Mars that stand over a mile high were carved by the wind, according to a study from the University of Texas.

In fact, the study notes, wind is a predominant factor in shaping the Martian geography--something which doesn't quite happen here on Earth.

Mackenzie Day, lead author of the study, said, “On Mars there are no plate tectonics, and there’s no liquid water, so you don’t have anything to overprint that signature and over billions of years you get these mounds, which speaks to how much geomorphic change you can really instigate with just wind. Wind could never do this on Earth because water acts so much faster, and tectonics act so much faste
