Desperation grows among migrants in Greece facing return to Turkey

Hundreds of migrants and refugees broke out of a holding centre on the Greek island of Chios on Friday following a night of violence there.

Tensions are boiling over as the prospect of deportation to Turkey nears under the EU deal with Ankara. And desperation is growing.

“Deportation is a big mistake because we risked a lot to come here, especially during our crossing from Turkey to Greece,” said Mohamed from Syria.

“We were smuggled here from Turkey. We can’t go back. We will repeat our journey again and again if needs be because we are running for our lives.”

Rioting and clashes between migrants have left several people injured at a number of Greek sites.
