Scientists have located an area in the North Pacific Ocean where temperature patterns seem to predict extreme heat spells in the eastern side of United States by up to 50 days in advance.

Heat waves can take a toll on agriculture, energy resources, and human health, so being able to predict one well in advance could prevent a great deal of trouble.
Scientists hailing from the National Center for Atmospheric Research, Pennsylvania State University, Harvard University and the University of Washington say they have found a way to see punishingly hot stretches coming up to 50 days in advance.
