Seattle man climbs 80ft tree, refuses to come down for over 24 hours

SEATTLE — A man climbed a tree in downtown Seattle, and despite hours of police coaxing, the man spent slightly more than 24 hours in the tree, refusing to get down.
The unidentified man has been described as "agitated" when he climbed to the top of an 80-feet-tall tree near the Macy's on 3rd street the morning of March 22. Police tried to talk the man down from the tree, but were unsuccessful.

Seattle police say when authorities arrived at the base of the conifer, the man refused to speak with them. He threw an apple, branches, pine cones and other items at officers on the street below, and claimed to be armed with a knife. The man was yelling intermittently.
"Issue appears to be between the man and the tree," Seattle police wrote in a since-deleted tweet.

A crowd gathered at the bottom of the tree and were told to move when authorities shut down the streets.

Seattle Police Department negotiators and crisis intervention specialists joined the effort and made use of a Seattle Fire truck's ladder, enabling them to make face-to-face contact with the man.

Around 9 p.m. that night, scrambled toward the bottom of the tree, but then climbed back up to the top.

The ordeal lasted until the following afternoon when the man climbed down and was taken to the emergency room for evaluation.

The ordeal sparked a trending hashtag on Twitter: #manintree.

Seattle Department of Transportation officials will review the health of the approximately 80-foot sequoia tree, which suffered damages during the incident. The tree is believed to have been in place since the 1970s.
