Florida 'Spice' epidemic making zombies out of users ... really?

CLEARWATER, FLORIDA — Officers from the Clearwater Police Department near Tampa, Florida released a video recently showing individuals at Crest Lake Park barely responsive and obviously in some sort of drug stupor. In the video, an officer can be heard asking a group of barely conscious young people when they had smoked the synthetic marijuana product known by trade names such as Spice or K2.
According to officials, there were three overdoses at the park last week. Area residents, however, say the majority of people using narcotics in the park are homeless individuals, and one resident told the Daily Mail he believes those in a half-catatonic state are more likely using 'flakka,' a powerful new drug that has emerged in Florida and other southern U.S. states over the past several years.
Synthetic marijuana has been shown to be significantly more harmful than natural marijuana, with many users reporting a rapid heart rate, serious paranoia and hallucinations. Emergency room visits by people using synthetic marijuana have increased dramatically, with one report claiming at least 15 deaths were linked to synthetic marijuana last year. (For some balance, the U.S. government says roughly 88,000 Americans die each year from alcohol-related causes while the CDC says 480,000 deaths per year in the U.S. are directly linked to smoking cigarettes. Both alcohol and tobacco are, of course, legal products.)
Unfortunately it can be hard to believe reports by media and or the government when it comes to narcotics, as both have a longstanding tendency to get their facts wrong and or sensationalize the issue. But whether it's "spice" or "flakka," if you're stupid enough to ingest a combination of unknown chemicals, well, enjoy your horrible trip, dude.
