$20,000 dresses worn by Obama's daughters spark online controversy

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama's daughters' choice of evening wear has got some people's knickers in a real twist.

Malia, 17, and Sasha, 14, sparkled in dresses by designer Naeem Khan worth nearly $20,000 dollars each at their first state dinner last week, as their father hosted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the White House, Yahoo Style reported.

Malia wore a 100 percent silk gown which originally retailed for $17,990, but is no longer available to buy. Her younger sister's outfit was even more expensive — a red, black and sheer piece which retails for $19,990.

Some right-wing bloggers thought that was just too much, even if there was no evidence that taxpayers footed the bill. The dresses would either have been loaned by Khan or paid for by the Obamas, according to myth-busting website Snopes.

It's common for fashion designers to lend expensive clothes and jewellery to high-profile people in return for the exposure and column inches generated by such arrangements.
