The "Great Work" or "Magnum Opus" is a term thrown around a lot in the occult community. It is a term that derives from alchemy. Quite simply, the Great Work is turning base metals, such as lead, into gold. This symbolizes self-change or self-transformation. Usually, this refers to obtaining union with the Divine. However, the great work of turning lead into gold sometimes refers to self-perfection or actualization. Thus, becoming the person you want to be. A perfected individual. There is a process of growth and gradual awakening. Self-knowledge and change is what the magnum opus is all about. Here, I explain the origins of this term, what it means, and I try to explain part of this process and how it works.

Qabalah, alchemy, Rosicrucian teachings, freemasonry (the perfect ashlar from the rough ashlar, Hermeticism, and Gnosticism all have this basic concept. Again, the term "Great Work" is used in alchemy to refer to changing base metals into gold. This is just another word or term for the same process taught in a number of religions and mystical systems, such as Yoga and other Eastern systems as well.

This is part of the "Occult Secrets Revealed" series in which we try to take a serious and rational look into the fundamentals of Western esoteric philosphy.. Without any bias involved, but only to understand "rationally" what this hidden knowledge is. The solar cycles were extremely important to many ancient cultures. The solstices and equinoxes are the basis of our modern calendar. Was there a "deeper" mystery here? If so, what is the deeper mystery? We are searching for the "hidden" secrets of the Western Esoteric Tradition. Today, we examine this along with certain correspondences with regard to Rosicrucianism, alchemy, Hermeticism, tarot, ceremonial magick, and Qabalah. This Western tradition is a vast collection of esoteric knowledge in the West that derives from Late Antiquity. The ancient temples may lay in ruins, but the ancients did leave us their symbols. And this esoteric wisdom still exists in degraded form today behind our modern and popular occultism. Here we examine this.
