Doctors without Borders opens humanitarian refugee camp in France for 'Jungle' residents

DUNKIRK, FRANCE — The first refugee camp to meet international humanitarian standards has just been built in France by medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres.

The Telegraph reports that more than a thousand refugees have been living in a camp in Grande-Synthe in France, nicknamed the "Jungle" for its poor conditions. Among them are 60 women and 74 children.

Migrants in Grande-Synthe are living in conditions worse than another "Jungle" refugee camp in neighboring Calais, according to Al Jazeera.

Medecins Sans Frontieres, or Doctors without Borders, announced on Monday the opening of a new humanitarian camp in Dunkirk, just a few kilometers away from Grande-Synthe. The new camp contains wooden shelters that can fit four people each, with each neighborhood equipped with proper lavatories, heating, a common kitchen and public lighting.

About 150 people have already moved from the Grande-Synthe jungle to the new site, which can house up to 2,500 people.

Medecins Sans Frontieres shouldered 2.6 million of the 3.1 million euros needed to build the camp, with the rest being paid for by the local government. Of the 375 planned cabins, 200 have been completed so far.

The French government was against the building of the new site, as it goes against their plan to move migrants away from the coast and into centers around the country.
