On February 19th, a Sea Shepherd crew spotted a humpback whale hopelessly tangled in an illegal gillnet near Baja California, Mexico.
Thankfully, the team was able to cut the net away, allowing the 35-foot marine animal to carry on as usual.
As of April 2015, gillnets are illegal for use in the Gulf of California.
Both Sea Shepherd ships and Mexican Navy vessels have since been removing the ones they find and saving a number of sea dwellers in the process.
To date, rescues include numerous young sharks, one whale, and seven rays.
