China deploys fighter jets to disputed South China Sea island, after setting up surface-to-air missiles

WOODY ISLAND, SOUTH CHINA SEA — China has recently deployed fighter jets to the same disputed island in the South China Sea where they placed surface-to-air missiles last week.

United States intelligence spotted Shenyang J-11 fighter jets and Xian JH-7 bombers on the disputed Woody Island in the past few days. A U.S. official said less than ten warplanes were deployed, Fox News reported.

Woody Island lies 250 miles southeast of China's Hainan Island. It is claimed by China, Taiwan and Vietnam. The island is the largest island in the Paracel chain of islands in the South China Sea.

"It is important for all of the nations – China, Philippines, Vietnam, others – not to engage in any unilateral steps of reclamation, of building, of militarization. And the fact is that there have been steps by China, by Vietnam, by others that have unfortunately created an escalatory cycle," Fox News quoted U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry as saying.

The United States and other countries are concerned that China might send warplanes to the Spratly islands next.
