Cameron pleads with London Mayor Johnson to back EU membership

London mayor Boris Johnson on Sunday said he would support a vote for Britain to leave the European Union in a blow for Prime Minister David Cameron ahead of a membership referendum in June.
"I will be advocating vote Leave," said Johnson, a popular politician from Cameron's own Conservative Party who is seen as a potential successor to the prime minister.
Prime Minister David Cameron made a last-ditch appeal to London Mayor Boris Johnson to support Britain staying in the EU Sunday as he battles to make his case to eurosceptics ahead of a June 23 referendum.
Cameron used a BBC interview to address the charismatic Johnson, who is expected to announce his position at 22:00 GMT Sunday in a move which could transform the out campaign if he backs them.
Cameron also made clear his battle lines for the referendum, arguing that Britain is "safer" and "stronger" in Europe despite eurosceptic claims that the EU is bloated and unnecessary.
"I would say to Boris what I say to everybody else which is we'll be safer, we'll be stronger, we'll be better off inside the EU," Cameron said.
