HONOLULU — Authorities are investigating the crash of a tourist helicopter in Honolulu that was carrying a family of four on an aerial tour of the islands.

The Honolulu Star Advertiser reports that five people, including a pilot, were on board the Bell 206B helicopter when it crashed in Hawaii on Thursday.

The single-engine helicopter had been flying over Pearl Harbor near the USS Arizona Memorial, where it may have suffered mechanical failure.

A video clip of the crash shows the aircraft making a hard landing in the water several feet from the shore.

Three passengers surfaced immediately after the crash, followed closely by a fourth one, as bystanders jumped into the water to help.

The fifth passenger, a 16-year-old boy, remained trapped inside the sunken helicopter. He was rescued by two people, who used a knife to cut his seat belt and carry him to safety.

The teen remains in critical condition, while three other family members are reportedly stable, according to KHON.

The pilot was also taken to the hospital, though his condition is unknown.
