LOS ANGELES — One of the the largest gas leaks in U.S. history was permanently sealed this week in California, Reuters reported, citing state regulators.

According to the BBC, the Southern California Gas Co. (SoCal Gas) had pumped the ruptured Aliso Canyon gas line full of heavy fluids and cement. Additionally, a recently drilled relief line managed to head off the pipeline breach and halted leaked gas, Reuters reported.

The leak began in October and came from a broken line deep beneath the SoCalGas-owned Aliso Canyon gas field. Approximately 94,000 metric tons of methane gas are estimated to have been leaked leaked from the breached pipe, the BBC reported, citing the California Air Resources Board.

The stench of the emitted fumes made scores of Port Rancher residents sick and resulted in a temporary relocation of some 6,600 households, Reuters reported.
