Astronomers Have Spotted Star System Where Eclipse Lasts 3 Years
  • 8 years ago
Far away in the universe is a place where the eclipse of the sun occurs only once every 69 years and endures for roughly 3 years.

Here on Earth, we see solar eclipses relatively frequently but they are short-lived.
However, far away in the universe is a place where the disappearance of the sun occurs only once every 69 years and endures for roughly 3 years. The discovery was made by a team of astronomers from Vanderbilt University and Harvard University.
Said Joey Rodriguez, one of the astronomers involved in the record-breaking finding, “It's the longest duration stellar eclipse and the longest orbit for an eclipsing binary ever found...by far."
The star system in which the extended blackout happens is located roughly 10,000 light years away and known simply as TYC 2505-672-1.
